I've taken my kids (8 & 13) on short hikes and we do a fair bit of car camping. On our next camp trip we'll be going on our first "all day" type hike. Obviously I'm taking food&water, compass, map, pocket knife, first aid kit, clothing layers.... prolly a space blanket and my lil' Esbit stove just cuz I'm a mom and I'd rather be over prepared than under prepared since I'm taking the kids with me.
Am I forgetting anything important?

flashlight (you never know if you might get delayed and have to head back in the dark)
toilet paper and a baggie to put it in -post use.
band-aids or moleskin for blisters
I also like to bring that antibacterial gel that dissolves or some wet wipes. hands tend to get dirty in nature.
and I don''t go anywhere without chapstick, but its a neurosis of mine.

Re: hiking while camping - what to take in the daypack?
Tue, July 31, 2007 - 12:38 PMwe've got a wind up flashlight which we've definitely gotten our money's worth out of - I'll throw that in there... we don't get cell reception in the area - maybe toss in a whistle in case of emergency? Wipies are a great idea too - I can multi task with those! -

Thu, August 16, 2007 - 4:02 PMoh yeah,we packed out our trash.... well, everything except the apple core a chipmunk ran up and stole before I could get it in the trash bag! They did really well, but I doubt I'll take my daughter on anything that long again for awhile.
